THE HOLSWORTHY AIRPORT PROPOSAL -
By Michael Lawson
Illawarra Mercury July 24, 1997
"Wollongong Lord Mayor David Campbell yesterday said it appeared the Federal Government had something to hide over its push for a major international airport at Holsworthy.
Councillor Campbell earlier announced the Howard Government would be brought before the Administrative Appeals Tribunal next month to justify its decision to keep secret documents relating to the Holsworthy airport bid.
The move follows the Government's refusal to publicly table any documents detailing why Holsworthy was resurrected as a site for Sydney's second airport.
A Federal Government report 10 years ago rated Holsworthy a lowly ninth of a possible 10 sites for the airport, according to the Lord Mayor.
He wants to know why Holsworthy suddenly is rated number one."

Although spot on with his assessment lets beef up the language contained in the above article a bit:
"H.A.D. I.T. says that the Federal Government has definitely something to hide over its push for a major international airport at Holsworthy. Its refusal to hand over complete documentation that would showcase its quirky manipulation of existing EIS data is nothing short of scandalous. This undemocratic behaviour has had a major negative impact on public perception of Federal Government performance over the last few months. The honeymoon for this relatively "young" Liberal Federal Government is well and truly over. Shame, some of us were actually looking forward to a period of renewed political vigor with the installation of the Howard Federal Government, rather than be thrusted into a period of uncertainty and aimless leadership over issues such as Holsworthy.
Residents will be happy to learn that the Howard Government will be brought before the Administrative Appeals Tribunal next month to justify its decision to keep secret documents relating to the Holsworthy airport bid. Although this action has not been widely publicised. The press should be picking up on this"
It is no wonder that H.A.D. I.T. asserts that the
International Visitors: Is this the sort of clandestine behaviour you would expect from your elected officials concerning the most important infrastructure development proposal and environmental issue to affect your nation this century? We will not take it lying down either.................
A University of New England geophysicist DR JOHN STANLEY has dismissed claims that unexploded bomb at the HOLSWORTHY MILITARY RESERVE would render it an inappropriate site for Sydney's second airport facility.
Dr STANLEY says technology developed by the university could detect the underground unexploded bombs. And it would only cost about five thousand dollars a hectare.
